PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of obtaining sharp images by correcting a focal distance with a simple structure, without needing drastic design change or securing a wide space on an upper surface, when foreign materials are prevented from being stuck on the surface of slit glass. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with a still original placing part 10 for placing an original for reading an image, while stopping the original, an original moving mechanism 20 for moving the original by providing a gap with the slit glass when reading the image while moving the said original, an optical mechanism 30 for entering, diffracting and outgoing either of reflected light from the original placed on the still original placing part 10 or reflected light from the original moved by the original moving mechanism 20 and an image reader 40 for reading the image on the original by entering the reflected light from the optical mechanism 30. When reading the image while moving the original, the image reader 49 is shifted toward the optical mechanism 30.
