PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable high-quality communication at all times without being affected by the environment of using the equipment body by setting the characteristics of an equalizer based on the reception level of a dial tone signal. SOLUTION: A communication part 7 of FAX equipment is provided with a modem 11 for modulating or demodulating an image signal (FAX signal) to be transmitted/received and a two-wire/four-wire converting circuit 12 for controlling the transmission of the signal from the main body of FAX equipment to a line and the reception of the signal transmitted through the line. The modem 11 is provided with an equalizer 11a. The two-wire/four-wire converting circuit 12 is provided with a sidetone preventing circuit. The FAX equipment detects a line loss by detecting the reception level of the dial tone signal transmitted from a station (exchange) and sets the equalizer 11a and the sidetone preventing circuit on the basis of the detected reception level.
