Friction welding comprises pressing rotating convex and concave welding faces into one another to form a friction region adjacent a re-entrant region into which plasticized material flows. Friction welding process comprises pre-forming the welding faces as convex/concave rotational faces which are pressed coaxially into one another so that the or each friction region is adjacent a re-entrant region, the two welding faces being spaced apart at the start of friction and plasticized material of one or both workpieces flows to effect interlocking of the workpieces.
