PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a front derailleur for an upper tensile cable or a lower tensile cable by providing the front derailleur basically having a fixing member, a chain guide and a link mechanism. SOLUTION: This front derailleur 12 for a bicycle is provided with a fixing member 30, a chain guide 32 and a link mechanism fixed between the fixing member 30 and the chain guide 32. The link mechanism is provided with an energizing member energizing the chain guide 32 toward a shrinkage position or an expansion position, a cable fitting member connected to a shift cable 18, a cable guide adapter 85 removable from the cable fitting member, and a first link rotatably connected to the fixing member 30. The cable guide adapter 85 has a cable receiving face for guiding the shift cable 18, therefore the front derailleur 12 can be used for an upper tensile cable or a lower tensile cable.
