PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain corresponding hydroperoxides in a high selectivity by oxidizing hydrocarbons with an oxygen-containing gas while positively and continuously removing organic acids by-produced by the oxidation reaction from the oxidation reaction system. SOLUTION: This method for oxidizing hydrocarbons (e.g. cumene) with an oxygen-containing gas (e.g. air) to provide hydroperoxides (e.g. cumene hydroperoxide) comprises carrying out the oxidation reaction while aggressively removing a by-produced organic acid (e.g. formic acid) from the oxidation reaction system to selectively convert the hydrocarbons to the objective corresponding hydroperoxides. The removal of the by-produced organic acid is carried out by water extraction, and the water phase is continuously removed to the exterior of the oxidation reaction system to prevent the accumulation in the system. The reaction can be carried out while blowing an inert gas preferably of 5-20 times in volumes as much as the volume of the oxygen-containing gas into a gas phase part at the upper part of the oxidation reaction vessel, if necessary, under pressurization, preferably in the temp. range of 50-100 deg.C. The reaction can be carried out in the coexistence of a basic compound.
