PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently purify a low molecular weight isocyanate by treating the low molecular weight isocyanate with a specific compound under a specific condition and then by removing high molecular weight compounds and/or high molecular weight reaction products. SOLUTION: This method is to treat (A) a low molecular weight isocyanate [e.g. 4-isocyanatomethyl-1,8-octanediisocyanate(nonanetriisocyanate)] with (B) a compound of the formula [wherein, (n) is 1-0; R is a 10-20C (un)saturated alkylene, a cycloalkylene, an aralkylene or a bifunctional aryl, and may contain hetero, if needed, and may be have constituent; X is H, OH, SH, F, Cl or the like] at a temperature of <200 deg.C, preferably at a temp. of about 150-180 deg.C for >=10 min, preferably for about 3-15 h. and then to remove high molecular weight compounds and/or high molecular weight reaction products through distillation, extraction or the like to purify the compound A. The compound B is applied in an amount of >=0.1 wt.%, preferably 1.0-5.0 wt.% based on the weight of the compound A.
