PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a polyester while using a polycondensation catalyst other than an antimony compound by using a novel catalyst prepared by combining at least two compounds each having substantially no catalytic acitivity for polyester polymerization, combining so that the combination has a substantial catalytic activity. SOLUTION: A novel polyester polymerization catalyst substantially having a catalytic activity is prepared by combining at least two compounds each having substantially no catalytic activity for polyester polymerization, preferably by combining at least one metal compound with at least one organic compound. The metal of the metal compound is preferably selected from among sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, beryllium, calcium, strontium, silicon, vanadium, chromium, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, tellurium and copper. Preferably, the organic compound is represented by formula I or II (wherein Ar is aryl; X1, X2 and X3 are each H, a hydrocarbon group, acyl, a sulfonylated group, a phosphorylated group or a hydrocarbon group having an ether bond).
