PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assure intensified fatigue strength by building material which lowers the melting point of a base body into an orthopedic implant before sintering a porous layer to the base body when forming the porous layer to the implant. SOLUTION: The orthopedic implant 10 in the form of a hip joint stem 12 includes the base body 11 and the porous layer 14 consisting of metallic particles. The 'particles' include beads, fibers, wire mesh and other known materials and their shapes. When the particles are formed as, for example, spherical beads, the porous layer 14 is bonded to the base body 11 in the process of sintering to induce the bond of the atoms of the beads to the base body 11 by bringing the beads into contact with the base body 11, then applying heat thereto. At this time, the melting point of the base body is lowered by building the melting point lowering material, for example, metal or nonmetal element or the intermetallic compound of the same element into the base body. As a result, the fatigue strength of the implant is greatly intensified. |
