Conformationally constrained peptides

Peptides and methods for their synthesis are provided having unique and useful properties for immuno-therapy and prophylaxis of HIV and other infectious diseases. Medical compositions are provided that contain one or more of the peptides. In a particularly advantageous embodiment, a peptide useful for a virus that enters a host cell in a pH independent manner is made from an envelope protein of the virus by replacing an infection enhancing sequence with a sequence that elicits neutralizing antibody. This feature allows the use of new regions of envelope proteins from this class of virus.
