PURPOSE: A method for recognizing the face of a customer for a bank transaction system is provided to completely blocking the transaction with a financial institute's automated teller machine(ATM) if an abnormal image of the user is captured, such as an image of the user covering one's face with hands, extremely tilting one's face, covering significant part of one's face with a hat, or wearing a veil or a mask. CONSTITUTION: A method for recognizing the face of a customer for a bank transaction system is composed of image capturing, conversion, extraction, comparison, confirmation, and approval. An image input device(100), installed in the front of the ATM, films the customer's face using a CCD camera, and outputs the filmed facial signal to the image capture board(110). The image capture board converts the received signal into digital signals of specifically sized R, G, B data, and outputs them to the data converter(130) through the controller(120). The received R, G, B signals are converted into brightness and tint signals and outputted to the image recognizer(140). The image recognizer uses the received image and selects the individual blocks that are greater than the specified size. All other blocks and small block groups are eliminated and the number and size of the selected individual blocks are determined through chain tracking. The distinguished characteristics of the selected blocks are extracted and searched, the appearance recognition rate is calculated, and one image with the highest recognition rate is selected. The appearance recognition rate of the selected image is compared to the standard appearance recognition rate, and if higher than the standard value, a control signal that allows the transaction is outputted to the transaction processor(150). The transaction processor displays a message, which informs the customer of the approved access, on the display(160), and the customer's image signal is stored in the record department(170).
