PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for compensating an edge of an image are provided to set a coring value and a gain factor value according to the shape of the image, thereby stably and efficiently performing a compensating process. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus for compensating an edge of an image comprises an edge component detecting portion(20) for detecting an edge component from a luminance signal, a coring process portion(22) for coring the detected edge component using a first control value, a gain adjusting portion(24) for adjusting a result from the coring process portion using a second control value, a compensation controlling portion(28) for adjusting a coring value and a gain factor value input from an outside and outputting as a first and second control value, a level restricting portion(26) for restricting a level of the result from the gain adjusting portion into a desired limit value input from an outside and then outputting the result, and a signal compositing portion for compositing the result from the level restricting portion with the luminance signal and then outputting the result as a compensated result.
