The present invention provides a method for increasing freezability and hypothermic storage of a gamete of an animal, comprising the step of feeding the animal material comprising an element from the group consisting of a source of omega 3, 18:3 omega 3 (LNA), 20:5 omega 3 (EPA), 22:5 omega 3 (DPA) and 22:6 omega 3 (DHA) fatty acids and mixtures thereof, in an amount effective to increase freezability of sperm and oocytes or eggs, by substantially maintaining at least one fertility factor. Furthermore, the present invention provides a dietary supplement to increase freezability and hypothermic storage of animal sperm and oocytes or eggs, comprising an element from the group consisting of a source of omega 3, 18:3 omega 3 (LNA), 20:5 omega 3 (EPA), 22:5 omega 3 (DPA) and 22:6 omega 3 (DHA) fatty acids and mixtures thereof. |
