In the present invention there is disclosed an ophthalmic preparation intended for use as an artificial tear, containing hyaluronate functioning as viscosity thickener, preferably in the form of sodium salt and with molecular weight ranging from 500 000 to 4 000 000 with concentration in the range of 0.05 to 2 percent by weight and the following ions, which do not comprise sodium ions contained in the hyaluronic acid sodium salts in the following amounts: 95 mmole/l of sodium ions, 12 to 28 mmole/l of potassium ions, 0.4 to 1.5 mmole/l of calcium ions, 0.4 to 1 mmole/l of magnesium ions, 50 to 150 mmole/l of chloride ions and 7 to 20 mmole/l of phosphate ions and water. It can preferably contain 0.7 mmole/l of citrate ions. Formulation having osmolarity ranging within 140 to 280 mOsm/l is suitable for treating keratoconjunctivitis sicca and it can be administered in all cases, in which the use of artificial lacrimas is recommended, for instance for treating eye irritation caused by environment or contact lenses.
