PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To process an evaporated fuel generated in the fuel system of an internal combustion engine, without impairing the stratified combustion when fuel is injected in the combustion stroke from a fuel injection valve to inject the fuel directly into a combustion chamber, so as to perform stratified combustion where the mixture gas exists unevenly in the neighbourhood of an ignition plug. SOLUTION: An auxiliary air injecting device 20 injects auxiliary air for atomizing the fuel to near the nozzle hole of a fuel injection valve 7, and as auxiliary air, air containing the evaporated fuel generated in the fuel system of the engine is used. The amount of evaporated fuel supplied to the device 20 is predicted, and on the basis of the prediction value, the injection timing and period are changed.
