PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for membrane failure detection of a hollow fiber membrane filter device of high reliability which is capable of surely and early detecting the failure of a hollow fiber membrane even when the number of particulates in raw water is small in spite of the large-sized membrane filter device or small number of fine particulates in raw water, an apparatus therefor and a membrane separator. SOLUTION: This method for membrane failure detection detects the failure of the hollow fiber membrane of the membrane filter device 4 by the drop of an air pressure by introducing pressurized air into the membrane filter device 4 from the permeation side of the membrane filter device 4 when the turbidity of the permeated water transmitted through the membrane filter device 4 changes sharply or when the turbidity of the permeated water exceeds the predetermined value. Further, the invention relates to the method for membrane failure detection which facilitates the detection of the turbidity of secondarily concentrated water by the secondarily concentrated water obtained by concentration of the primary permeated water, the apparatus therefor and the membrane separator.
