PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make generation of knocking hard, remove NOx from residual gas being not exhausted from a cylinder, and improve antiknock property by providing an electric discharge part having an electrode positioned in a cylinder on the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine, and connecting a high voltage generating source to the electrode. SOLUTION: In this internal combustion engine, a cylinder head 4 is provided with an intake pipe 5 and an exhaust pipe 6, and they are respectively opened/ closed by an intake valve and an exhaust valve. An electric discharge part 7 is fitted to the cylinder head 4 via an insulator 9, under the condition of exposing a positive electrode 8 for discharge provided on the underside in a combustion chamber. This discharge part 7 is connected to a positive high- voltage electric power source via a line 10, and by generating corona discharge from the discharge part 7, a decomposing and removal of NOx in exhaust gas remaining in the exhaust stroke is attained. This discharge is stopped, when a flame detecting means detects generation of a flame in the intake pipe. Hereby when back fire is at the worst generated in the intake pipe, back fire thereafter is prevented.
