PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the attachment of a melted slag at a throat present between a high temperature gas-generating part (a gasification furnace) and a thermal decomposition reaction part of a coal, causing operational trouble of a rapid thermal decomposition reactor of the coal. SOLUTION: This method for thermally decomposing a coal by using a thermal decomposition apparatus of the coal constituted of a high temperature gas-generating part using the coal or a char as a fuel and having a slag- discharging opening for discharging a molten slag at the bottom part, and a thermal decomposition reaction part of the coal for mixing a high temperature gas from the high temperature gas-generating part, obtained by feeding a dust coal to the upper part of the high temperature gas-generating part, with the dust coal, comprises blowing the dust coal into a contraction part (a throat) to lower the temperature of the wall surface of the throat and to prevent the dispersed slag from the high temperature gas-generating part from attaching to the throat.
