PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst improved in the activity per chromium atom by reacting an organoaluminum compound with a chromium(VI) imide compound carried on an inorganic oxide solid. SOLUTION: (A) A chromium(VI) imide compound is carried in an amount of 0.01-10 wt.% on an inorganic oxide solid comprising, e.g. silica-alumina to produce a solid component. The solid component is reacted with (B) an organoaluminum compound at an atomic ratio of aluminum to chromium of (1 to 1,000):1 to give the catalyst for producing an ethylene polymer. The component A comprises a compound represented by formula I, the examples including bis(t-butylimido)dichlorochromium(VI) and bis(t-butylimido)bis(trimethylsiloxy) chromium(VI). Examples of component B include trialkylaluminums, and almoxanes represented by, e.g. formula II. In the formulas, R1 and R2 are each a 1-18C alkyl or the like; R3 is methyl, ethyl or the like; X1 and X2 are each halogeno or the like; and (p) is 1 to 1,000.
