PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a display in which the priority is given to brightness and a display in which the priority is given to color reproducibility to be executed by a single projection type display device using liquid crystal. SOLUTION: This display device is constituted so that the pictures of liquid crystal display parts 8R, 8G and 8B are projected by a projection lens 10 by separating a white light beam emitted from a light source 1 to three colors by a color separation optical system constituted by combining dichroic mirrors DM1 and DM2 and total reflection mirrors M1, M2 and M3, making them incident on the display parts 8R, 8G and 8B and synthesizing them by a dichroic prism 9 thereafter. An optical element 13 transmitting an area of some wavelength being equal to or under some wavelength (about 570 nm, for example) and obstructing wavelengths being equal to or over some wavelength is arranged so that it can be linearly moved in the optical path of green light wavelength just before the display part 8G or the optical path of blue light wavelength just before the mirror M3. Thus, the display with high color purity can be executed when the element 13 is set in the optical path of the green light wavelength and the display action that the priority is given to the brightness can be executed when it is set in the optical path of the blue light wavelength. |
