PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive method for a solid-state image pickup device that outputs a picture with high sensitivity and dynamic range to a display device even when signals are interleaved. SOLUTION: In the drive method for a solid-state image pickup device consisting of a photoelectric conversion section where pixels are arranged in a matrix, a vertical transfer section 2 that reads signal charges and transfers them in a vertical direction, a horizontal transfer section 3 that receives the signal charges and transfers them in a horizontal direction, and a charge detection section 4 that converts the signal charge into a signal voltage or a signal current and provides the output of it, the vertical transfer section 2 simultaneously reads signal charges by n-columns of odd number rows from the horizontal transfer section 3 among a 1 unit row group consisting of m-rows in the photoelectric conversion section and signal charges by n even number rows from the 1 unit row group from the opposite side of the horizontal transfer section 3, the vertical transfer section 2 transfers the read signal charges to the horizontal transfer section 3 when the transfer of the horizontal transfer section 3 is stopped and the horizontal transfer section 3 mixes the signal charges, where m is a natural number being 8 or over and n is a natural number being 2 or over and less than m/2.
