PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve accuracy in setting the gap depth position in a magnetic head having a magnetic recording track width of 1μm or less. SOLUTION: Upper and lower core layers 47, 27 extend from the rear region Y toward the pole end region X, with their end faces exposed on the surface 152 opposite to the medium, and a gap layer 45 is provided between the layers 47, 27 in the pole end region X. A groove 43 extending from the surface 152 opposite to the medium toward the rear region Y is provided in the pole end region X of an insulation layer 42 laminated on the lower core layer 27. In this groove 43, a lower pole layer 44, a gap layer 45 and an upper pole layer 46 are laminated, with the lower pole layer 44 connected to the lower core layer 27 and the upper pole layer 46 connected to the upper core layer 47. The groove 43 possesses a groove body part 51 that extends in the pole end region X in a cross sectional dimension nearly the same as the dimension of the opening in the surface 152 opposite to the medium, and a groove continuous part 90 that extends in the rear region Y continuously to the groove body part 51.
