PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a three-dimensional image of a sample which is free of lightness unevenness in a short time by making better use of sectioning effect as a feature of the confocal microscope. SOLUTION: A photointerrupter 21 detects the rotation of a rotary disk 20 and a controller 22 places a CCD camera 9 in exposure operation in synchronism with the rotation of the rotary disk 20 and varies the relative axial distance between an objective 6 and a sample 7 at timing so as not to overlap with the exposure operation of the CCD camera 9.
