摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting device capable of emitting light with a narrow spectral width in a very high efficiency, using a two-dimensional photonic band gap and manufactured using an organic light emitting material. SOLUTION: A light emitting device 1000 is composed of a board 10, anode 20, organic light emission layer 40, cathode 30, and a first 100 and a second diffraction grating (optical member) 200. The first diffraction grating 100 has a refractive index distribution of one-dimensional periodicity in the X-direction and can form a photonic band gap. The second diffraction grating 200 has a refractive index distribution of one-dimensional periodicity in the Y-direction and can form a photonic band gap. A defect 300 is provided in either of the first 100 or the second gratings 200. The defect 300 is set so as to exist within the light emission spectrum having a prescribed energy level resulting from defects. The light emission layer 40 can emit light by current energization, and an electric field is impressed by the anode 20 and cathode 30. The light emission layer 40 functions also as defect section 300.
