PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head in which the recording track width is 1μm or less and also to provide a method for manufacturing such a magnetic thin film head. SOLUTION: In the thin film magnetic head 41, upper and lower core layers 47, 27, extending from the rear region Y towards the pole end region X, are exposed on the surface 152 opposite to the medium, and a gap layer 45 is provided between the layers 47, 27 in the pole end region X. An insulation layer 42 is laminated onto the lower core layer 27 and, in the pole end region X of the insulation layer 42, a groove is provided extending from the face 152 opposite to the medium towards the rear region Y. A lower pole layer 44, a gap layer 45 and an upper pole layer 46 are laminated in this groove, with the lower pole layer 44 joined to the lower core layer 27 and the upper pole layer 46 joined to the upper core layer 47.
