A retractable winged I.V. set (10) has a slidable retraction body (32) mounted in a hollow chamber (22) of a housing (12). The retraction body (32) has a hollow needle (34) fixed in its front end (24), and a tube connector (48) for passing fluid from an external reservoir through the needle (34). The housing (12) has a pivoting releasable latch (27) preferably configured as dual opposed latches (28) that are biased to normally encroach into the chamber (22) through an opening in the wall (20) of the housing (12). A catch portion (40) on the reatraction body (32) is contacted by an encroaching latch portion (58) to hold the retraction body (32) in an unretracted position with the needle exposed for use. When the latches (28) are relased, a spring (52) drives the retraction body (32) to the back of the chamber (22) and withdraws the needle (34) into the housing (12).
