Acid or alkaline solution allows water in it to thin a fuel like methanol as it passes through an electrolyte membrane. Set between an anode (1) and a cathode (2), a solid fuel electrolyte (3) has a liquid-feed area (4) to supply acid that is fed by a pipe (5) into the anode's space (6) where methanol fuel is fed in and oxidized. Air is fed into the cathode space (7).
