The seat has a height-adjustable seat area and a separate backrest, on a longitudinally adjustable seat rail. The backrest (10) is fastened to the seat rail (2') via a height adjusting unit. The seat area (1) is fastened to the backrest or a part connected to it, pivoted about a transverse axis (16). The height adjusting unit is a four-bar linkage with a coupling plate (4') with pivot levers (5',6'), one of which is adjusted by a mechanical or motorized cylinder (9), and locked in position by a locking mechanism.
