PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably cast semi-solidified metal having the wide range of solid phase ratio by arranging a heat-insulating member for covering a prescribed range of the outer peripheral surface of a cooling cylinder so as to be freely attached/detached on the outer peripheral surface of the cooling cylinder. SOLUTION: Molten metal 1a is rotatively stirred with a magnetic field generated with an electromagnetic induction coil 4 in a gap between the inner wall surface of the cooling cylinder 2 and a core 5, and cooled to make the semi-solidified metal 1b. Since the heat- insulating member 2a for covering the prescribed range of the outer peripheral surface of the cooling cylinder 2, is arranged so as to be freely attached/detached, the heat radiating quantity is reduced. Therefore, when the temp. and the drawing speed of the molten metal 1a supplied into a tundish 1 are equalized with the conditions at the casting time of the semi-solidified metal 1b having high solid phase ratio, the temp. of the semi-solidified metal 1b at the lower part of the cooling and stirring vessel can be made to be high and the semi- solidified metal 1b having low solid-phase ratio can be cast. In the case of arranging no heat-insulating member 2a, the heat radiating quantity from the cooling cylinder 2 is made to be large and the temp. of the semi-solidified metal 1b at the lower part of the cooling and stirring vessel can be made to be low and the semi-solidified metal 1b having high solid phase ratio can be obtd. In this way, the semi-solidified metal in the wide range from the low solid phase ratio to the high solid phase ratio can continuously be cast.
