PURPOSE:To provide a new spiro compound having gyrase inhibitory activity, useful as an antibacterial agent or antineoplastic agent. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula I or II (R<1> is H, OH, 1-6C alkoxy, or acyloxy; R<2> and R<3> are each H, 1-6C alkyl or acyl), e.g. (4S)-12,3,4- tetrahydro-45-dihydroxyspiro{naphthalene-1,2'-naphtho[1,8-de][1,3]diox in}. The compound of the formula I or II can be obtained by culture of the unidentified fungi N983-46 ( FERM P-3993) and by isolation from the resultant culture fluid followed by purification. Or, it can be obtained by acylating or alkylating, in an appropriate solvent, the compound isolated from the above culture fluid. The compound is useful for preventing or curing diseases due to a wide range of pathogenic bacteria. |
