PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an abnormal image such as ground contamination in a device having a sucking means for sucking a sheet material onto a belt carrying means by providing a detecting means for detecting the condition for having an influence on the flatness of the sheet material, and controlling the sucking means on the basis of the detection result. SOLUTION: A carrying device 40 within a copying machine has a carrying belt 42 having a number of sheet sucking small holes, which is laid around a drive roller 43 and a driven roller 44, and a belt guide plate 45 having a fan sucking square hole that is used also as a duct is arranged under the carrying belt 42. A fan 41 as sucking means is provided in the lower part of the carrying device 40, and air is sucked through the small holes of the carrying belt 42 by its rotation to suck a sheet material on the carrying belt 42. In this case, a detecting means for detecting the condition having an influence on the flatness of the sheet material, for example, the kind of sheet material, the humidity in a sheet housing part, or the like is provided, and the fan 41 is ON/OFF controlled on the basis of the detection result.
