PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color separation optical system where a degree of alignment of a very small interval of spectrum prisms can be kept constant even when an operating environmental temperature is fluctuated and to provide an image pickup device using the system. SOLUTION: This color separation optical system 21 is provided with a spectrum prism 2 where at least two prisms 5B, 5R are opposed with a very small interval S and that applies color separation to an incident luminous flux by using the faces opposed at the very small interval S and emits the resulting flux and with support bases 23, 24 made of the same type of materials that are adhered and fixed to one side face 2a and the other side face 2b with the very small interval S in between, being orthogonal to the incident luminous flux to the spectrum prisms of the spectrum prism 2.
