PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a device capable of attaining storage of a comparatively large amount of image data by a comparatively small memory capacity, acceleration of an image forming speed, acceleration of color image formation and cost reduction by storing image data compressed by a compressing system corresponding to the image size in a memory. SOLUTION: Image data compressed by a compressing method corresponding to a picture size is stored in a memory. In this device, data of individual colors of Y, M, C and Bk outputted from an encoding part 21 are stored in the frame memory 22 of a sub-scanning delay control part 23. Then, when the size of an original image is a size (A3) unnecessitating editing processing of rotation, etc., data are converted to 48 bits, then subjected to variable-length code compression in addition and are stored. On the other hand, when the size of the original image is a size (equal to or smaller than A4) which can undergo editing of rotation, etc., data are subjected to only fixed-length compression to yield 48 bit per 4×4 pixels and them stored.
