Absolute encoder for measuring device having a mechanical drum-counter, consisting of five sensors (20) per counting drum (12), arranged in a plane at right angles to the counter axis (15) and a code (21) on the counting drum (12), which generates a digital rotary angle signal with a 12 DEG resolution. The drum-counter can be read out visually in a conventional manner and the encoder does not increase the torque necessary for driving the counter.
