PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the end of a magnetic tape where no CTL (tape travel control) signal is recorded. SOLUTION: This device is equipped with a take-up reel rotation detecting device 5 which detects a take-up reel 3 rotating and outputs an RD signal each time the reel 3 turns, a payoff reel rotation detecting device 6 which detects a payoff reel 4 rotating and outputs an RS signal each time the reel 4 turns, a capstan motor 12 which drives the reel 3 or 4, a CPFG signal detecting device 14 which detects the motor 12 rotating and outputs a CPFG signal each time the motor 12 rotates, and a magnetic tape end detecting device 8 which recognizes the period wherein the reel wound with the magnetic tape 9 makes one rotation from the RS or RD signal, counts the CPFG signals for one rotation of the wound reel, and detects the end of the magnetic tape 9 according to the count number.
