PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium to which a marge-type MR head to be used in the recording and reproducing operation of an in-plane magnetic recording medium can be applied and which can obtain a high reproduction output. SOLUTION: In this magnetic recording medium, a quasisoft magnetic film 2 and a vertical magnetic film 3 whose easy axis of magnetization is oriented perpendicularly to a substrate 1 are provided on the substrate 1. The quasisoft magnetic film 2 is formed to the side of the substrate 1 from the vertical magnetic film 3. Especially, the coercive force of the quasisoft magnetic film is 10 to 1,000 Oe, its film thickness is 1 to 200 nm, and its saturation magnetic Ms is 200 to 1,000 emu/cc. In addition, the coercive force Ha of the vertical magnetic film is 1,500 to 4,000 Oe, its film thickness is 10 to 200 nm, and its saturation magnetization Ms is 200 to 1,000 emu/cc.
