The composition for treating the inside of a porous article comprises a polyphenol oxidizing enzyme and a substrate. Optionally the composition can also contain a phenolic compound and/or an aromatic amine compound such as lignin or a lignin derivative. The lignin derivative is lignosulphonic acid or lignosulphonate. The substrate can be a sintered metal article, ceramic, brick, concrete, wood, chaffs, straw, bamboo, paper, foam or resin. The enzyme is a catechol oxidase, laccase, polyphenol oxidase, ascorbic acid oxidase or bilirubin oxidase. The composition can also contain at least one of a fragrance, deodorant, rust preventive, flame retardant, antibacterial agent, antiseptic, sanitizer, insect repellent, antiviral agent or organism repellant.
