PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a disk detecting method and device having highly-precise and stable performance. SOLUTION: Two photoelectric switches are provided which are for detecting a disk 1 inserted into the device. The first switch 5 is disposed at a position which is near the outermost circumference of the information area 6 in Y direction in the disk loading position P and which is near the innermost circumference of the information area 6 is X direction. The second switch 11 is disposed at a position which is inside from the first switch 5 in Y direction in the disk loading position P and which is at a radius of 4 cm or more from the center 12 of the disk device. A disk is judged properly loaded if either one of the photoelectric switches is off in the loading position P.
