Apparatus (10, 100) and methods for reducing pain associated with contractio ns such as uterine or other muscle contractions and/or for retraining muscles a re disclosed. The apparatus includes a sensor (14, 252) for developing a signal indicative of a contraction experienced by a muscle. They also include a stimulator (24) for applying stimulation to the patient. The apparatus also includes a control unit (16, 116) for automatically adjusting the stimulatio n provided by the stimulator at least partially in response to the signal developed by the sensor.
