PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose having excellent dispersibility in aqueous solution. SOLUTION: An etherification reaction is carried out with±0.2 mol/C6H10O5 excessive alkali based on anhydrous glucose unit and a reaction solvent is recovered. Then the reaction product is heat-treated at 100-150 deg.C for 0.5-3 hours to produce sodium carboxymethyl cellulose.
