PURPOSE: A safety system is provided for an automatic transmission which calculates a virtual reduction ratio when a driver shifts a selector lever from a drive position to neutral and then from neutral back into a drive position. CONSTITUTION: A virtual reduction ratio (P4) is compared with the reduction ratio (i2) obtained from a shifting characteristic diagram (B2). If there is a deviation, the virtual reduction ratio is assigned to a diagram (B2), which comprises a linearly constant reduction ratio (i2) surrounded by a reduction range (B2). The electronic control device (5) selects the set reduction ratio whose (P3) reduction range (B2) contains the virtual reduction ratio.
