PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a waste melting furnace capable of stably treating waste containing fly ash generated at a time of waste combustion or fly ash. SOLUTION: The operating method for a vertical waste melting furnace refers to melting and treating waste by cokes layers 30, wherein the cokes layers 30 are formed on a furnace bottom part to burn cokes and on which waste layers 31 are formed to preheat the waste or successively to crack the same to be gasified. When the waste containing fly ash generated at a time of waste combustion or fly ash is melted and treated, charging amount of the waste, the cokes, and lime stone are regulated so that a surface temperature of the cokes layers 30 is a specified temperature or higher.
