PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the changed point of data from the start position of a data search mode. SOLUTION: In a system control circuit 26, the rotation of a drum 14 is started by a drum control circuit 24 in accordance with the start of the data search, and also a capstan 20 is rotated in the reverse direction by a capstan control circuit 22 so that a magnetic tape 10 is advanced beforehand to the opposite direction in the distance X required for the stabilized running, or longer. After that, the tape is run in the original search direction to reproduce the system data. When the changed point of the recorded data is detected, the instruction is issued to the capstan control circuit 22 by the system control circuit 26 to stop the running of magnetic tape 10, and also the rotation of the drum 14 is stopped.
