A high-voltage circuit-breaker includes two coaxially opposite-facing arcing contact-tips as well as an arc blow-out device which includes a nozzle for arc blow-out as well as a mechanical compression device with a piston and cylinder which are mutually movable and define a compression space. A spring-loaded overpressure valve is provided at the floor of the cylinder or of the piston to enable flow-through of low-pressure arc-quench gas into a low-pressure chamber at completion of the switching movement. A device (18,25) enables the overpressure over-flow valve for the compression chamber (19) valve (14) to be opened at the end of the relative movement between piston (26) and cylinder (27).
