Mono-aryloxy-metallocenes are obtained by reacting a ligand exchange compound, i.e. an optionally bridged metal cyclopentadienyl derivative, with a mono-aryloxy halide derivative of a Sub-Group III, IV, V or VI transition metal. A process for the production of mono-aryloxy-metallocenes of formula (II) involves reacting a ligand-exchange compound (III) with a transition metal compound (I), in which: M = a Sub-group III, IV, V or VI metal; X = halogen; Ar = a 6-40C aromatic group, preferably optionally fluorinated 6-24C aryl or 7-30C alkaryl, or 5-24C heteroaryl, especially 6-14C aryl substituted with 1-6C alkyl and/or 6-10C aryl groups; D = a neutral Lewis base ligand, preferably a linear, branched or cyclic oxygen-, sulfur-, nitrogen- or phosphorus-containing hydrocarbon; M<2> = lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, MgCl or MgBr; R<1>, R<2> = Si(R<12>)3 or a 1-30C carbon-containing group, preferably (optionally fluorinated) 1-25C alkyl, 2-25C alkenyl, 3-15C alkyl-alkenyl, optionally fluorinated 6-24C aryl, 7-30C aralkyl or alkaryl, or 5-24C heteroaryl, or 2 or more groups R<1> (or R<2>) and the linking ring atoms may form an optionally substituted 4-24C ring system; R<12> = H or a 1-40C carbon-containing group, preferably 1-20C alkyl, 1-10C alkoxy or fluoroalkyl, 6-20C aryl, 6-10C aryloxy or fluoroaryl, 2-10C alkenyl, 7-40C aralkyl or alkaryl, or 8-40C aralkenyl; x = the oxidation number of M minus 1; n, n' = 1-5 if k = 0, or 0-4 if k = 1; k = 0 or 1; p = 1 for metal ions with a double positive charge, or 2 for metal ions or ion fragments with a single positive charge; y = 0-2; B = a bridging element An Independent claim is also included for metallocenes (II) obtained by this process.
