A process for continuously producing a water-absorbing composite, characterized by comprising: a step for composite formation in which an aqueous solution of one or more polymerizable monomers comprising as a major component an unsaturated carboxylic acid in which 20% or more of the carboxyl groups have been neutralized is dropped as droplets, while being polymerized, onto a fibrous base being sent to the dropping point to thereby adhere the resin particles being polymerized to the fibrous base, and the polymerization is completed after the adhesion to form a particle/base composite; and a step for surface crosslinking in which a crosslinking agent having two or more functional groups reactive with carboxyl and/or carboxylate groups is added to and reacted with the composite in the presence of 1 to 100 parts by weight of water per 100 parts by weight of the resin particles derived from the polymerizable monomers and contained in the composite. By the process, a highly water-absorbing composite excellent in water absorption and water retention can be continuously and efficiently produced.
|
