PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safe polyester resin which is excellent in environment adaptability and flame retardance and, when used for electronic parts, etc., inhibits a contact failure of electronic parts caused by a decomposition gas generated from a flame retardant or the polyester itself. SOLUTION: The polyester resin comprises terephthalic acid or an ester- forming derivative thereof as a main acid component and butane diol and a phosphorus-containing glycol of the formula (wherein R is a structure containing an unsaturated hydrocarbon, aliphatic hydrocarbon or aromatic ring having a carbon number of 8 or smaller, which optionally contains an oxygen or sulfur atom) as main glycol components. In the resin, the phosphorus element content is from 0.3 to 2.0 wt.%, the melting point is 190 deg.C or higher, and the amount of glycol terminal is 30 meq/kg or smaller.
