PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having not only the large absolute value of a negative value of permittivity anisotropy but also a proper value of refractive index anisotropy, good compatibility and high chemical and physical stabilities and useful as a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R1 and R2 are each a 1-5C (substituted) alkyl, rings A1 and A2 are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-cyclohexenylene, or the like; X is CH2S, or the like; (m) is 0 or 1], e.g. trans, trans-4-(2,3-difluoro-4-ethoxyphenylmercaptomethyl)-4'-n- propylbicyclohexane. Furthermore, the above compound is obtained by subjecting a methyl 4'-substituted bicyclohexane-4-carboxylate represented by formula II (Q1 is a 1-15C alkyl or a 1-15C alkoxy group) to reduction with lithium aluminum hydride, reacting the prepared compound with hydrogen bromide and then reacting the resultant 4'-substituted bicyclohexylmethyl bromide with a substituted phenyl mercaptan compound.
