PURPOSE: A universal asynchronous transmitter/receiver having IC card reading interface and IC card reading system using it is provided to directly control smart card interface in IC card reader, by having IC card reading interface and to cut down a manufacturing cost of IC card reading system, energy source and material consumption. CONSTITUTION: A universal asynchronous transmitter/receiver having IC card reading interface is composed an universal asynchronous communication core(40), a tri-state control input/output buffer(42) and a multiplexor(44). The universal asynchronous communication core(40) performs an asynchronous serial communication and provides a mode selection signal(MSEL). The tri-state control input/output buffer(42) provides a serial input signal(SIN) as a serial data input when the mode selection signal(MSEL) indicates an universal asynchronous transmit/receive mode. Contrary, the tri-state control input/output buffer(42) provides the serial input signal(SIN) as an input/output pin when the mode selection signal(MSEL) indicates an IC reading mode. The multiplexor(44) selects a transmit clock output signal(*BAUDOUT) as a serial output signal(SOUT) when the mode selection signal(MSEL) indicates the IC reading mode. The multiplexor(44) selects an inner serial output signal(SOUTI) as the serial output signal(SOUT) when the mode selection signal(MSEL) indicates the universal asynchronous transmit/receive mode.
