PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display panel having an auxiliary electrode for reducing discharge start voltage between discharge maintaining electrodes and its operation method. SOLUTION: Thin auxiliary electrodes 20 are arranged between X electrodes 14 and Y electrodes 13 arranged on discharge cells of this plasma display panel, and the plasma display panel is operated so that an auxiliary electrode operation pulse is applied to the auxiliary electrode 20 at a time not later than a start time of a discharge maintaining pulse. Thereby, the discharge start voltage of the main discharge can be reduced and the brightness can be improved.
