PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyester film for magnetic recording media, suited to manufacturing high-capacity data storing tapes having low error rates. SOLUTION: A polyester film has an SRa of 2-5 nm and SRz of 10-40 nm on one surface A, the Young's modulus of this film is 5500 MPa or more in the length direction and 6500 MPa or more in the width direction, the thermal shrinkage ratio of this film at 100 deg.C for 30 min is 1.0% or less in the length direction and also in the width direction. A magnetic recording tape has a ferromagnetic metal film layer formed on the one surface A of the polyester film.
